Archway Local Ale Champion
wins Pub of the Season : The
Charlotte Despard, in Archway Rd., N19 has
been awarded CAMRA
North London's Winter Pub of the Season,
beating off hundreds of other pubs in the
area.
John
Cryne, CAMRA's North London Branch Chairman
said "The pub is a member of
CAMRA's LocAle scheme, which means it
stocks at least one London beer, in
this case Sambrook's from South London.
Currently it sells one other real ale,
St Austell Tribute from Cornwall but
soon will have added two more rotating
guest ales and traditional cider. It's
a great example of a London pub reinventing
itself to cater for its local customers.
As well as being an attraction for cask
beer lovers, it combines good food,
a range of unusual/craft bottled beers,
music, free papers, weekly quiz night,
sports on the TV and board games reflecting
a wish to satisfy everyone, whatever
their background and likes". |

The pub was refurbished not long ago and features
a mix of seating and styles to suit all types.
Named after Charlotte Despard (born Charlotte
French) - 1844 to 1839 - a British born, later
Irish based, suffragist, novelist and Sinn
Féin activist. Having started off as
writer of ten novels she was later imprisoned
for her political beliefs. CAMRA's
LocAle scheme is an initiative that
promotes pubs stocking locally produced real
ales. Local for this purpose is defined as
being within 30 miles of the pub. Greater
London now has a number of breweries many
of which have been encouraged in their development
by the scheme, such as Redemption in Tottenham,
Brodie's in Walthamstow and Sambrook's.
